Canada

Thomas Walker and Son were inventors and makers of nautical instruments in the 19th and 20th centuries. Their firm made logs, which were one of the most commonly used navigation instrument as they allowed sailors to measure distance at sea. The exact Canadian provenance of this artifact is unknown but it is possible that it came into the collection in the 1970s when Ingenium was collecting parts from a group of Canadian government ships built during the Second World War that were decommissioned in the 1970s. Thomas Walker and Son étaient des inventeurs et des fabricants d’instruments nautiques aux XIXe et XXe siècles. Leur entreprise fabriquait des rondins, qui étaient l’un des instruments de navigation les plus couramment utilisés car ils permettaient aux marins de mesurer la distance en mer. La provenance canadienne exacte de cet artefact est inconnue, mais il est possible qu’il soit entré dans la collection dans les années 1970 lorsque Ingenium recueillait des pièces d’un groupe de navires du gouvernement canadien construits pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale qui ont été déclassés dans les années 1970.

Technique

“Probably the most successful of the large, electric ship-logs. Introduced in 1934. Was used in conjunction with a wheelhouse repeater which allowed the log to be read in the charthouse rather than having to walk aft to check the reading of the taffrail. Distance run could be checked at a glance and any problems with a fouled rotator would be noticed more quickly. At one stage use with a copper cored log-line to combat the sharks but the line proved to be inflexible and inaccurate. Dispatch date from the Walker’s records - 1941.” (ref.2)

Dark, soiled brass-coloured metal housing, a white dial with black markings, a black-brown coloured cable with off-white discolouration, and a brass-coloured connector end.
