Querns were a common farmstead tool in Canada depending on the period and geographic region from the late 1700's to the mid 1930's.

Fonction

Used in the domestic environment to grind a small quantity of cereal grains into flour for food production.

Technique

Querns have traditionally been used by families to proces some portion of their cereal crop into flour. This one by its materials of construction and technology is quite early, yet querns were still being made and used in the post 1900 period in western Canda by eastern European immigrants. A primitive hand-turned grain mill.
