The Lakefield Canoe Building and Manufacturing Company was formed in 1904 when Thomas Gordon and Robert Stickland merged their two companies. Gordon was one of the pioneers of the Peterborough-style strip planking seen in many canoes.

Technique

The seams of the exterior are covered with batten. The flush batten was used with wide planks to make a continuous joint between the planks on the inside surface. It was similar to the metallic batten in that it covered the joint, but did not require close rib spacing. The flush batten was an easier method to work with but more labour intensive to install.
