A gauge used in cine photography to measure the intensity of light in order to ascertain the necessary duration of exposure when shooting film. Used with a cine camera, this instrument identifies the necessary settings for optimal film exposure.

Technique

An extinction meter is a device used to estimate exposure settings when photographing a subject. Finding the right exposure setting with an extinction meter relies on the accuracy of the photographers's vision [i.e. his or her ability to clearly distinguish a figure in the meter with the iris adjusted for increasingly diminished levels of light]. Holding the viewfinder close to the eye, the photographer had to point the meter towards the subject of the photograph to be able to get a reading. Drem was a well established extinction meter manufacturer in the early 20th century. Patented by Austrian Emil Mayer, the Cinofot, alos known as the Cinophot, has three rings or calibrated dials: one identifies film speed, another is the exposure scale in seconds, and the third is illegible.
