Période: This splint believed made, and presumably used, c. 1890.
Canada: Part of a large collection of medical artifacts, archival material & trade literature transferred to CSTM in 2002 from the former History of Medicine Museum, Toronto, ON.
Fonction: To correctly position and support injured limb, in order to promote healing. Specifically, this splint used to treat fractures of the femur.
Technique: Double incline plane splint for fractures of the femur. Foot is strapped to footboard and length can be adjusted by screws under footboard. Angle of flexion regulated by placement of base to footboard in one of six graduated slats. Two straps below knee and two over thigh; base board hinged to splint. Metal plate under thigh. [Ref. 3]

Marques: "E.S. Pratt & Son" and "2" stencilled in black ink on underside of leg support. "John Harcourt, M.D." handwritten in black lead pencil on underside of base. UHN catalogue no. "X922.1.3" printed by hand in white ink on underside of both leg support and base. "AM/ 3969" printed by hand in lead pencil on white adhesive label applied to splint back.
