This type of videotext decoder used for INET (intelligent network) videotext trials of early 1980s. INET was developed by Bell-Northern Research and Computer Communications Group of the TransCanada Telephone System. The donor worked on INET at Bell during 1960s.

Fonction

This Sceptre videotex decoder terminal was used to receive the communications data that's transmitted over narrow bandwidth line, which would be the telephone line in this case, and decode and convert it to something that can be put on to a display screen.

Technique

The Sceptre decoder terminal was develop by AT&T to use the North American Presentation Level Protocol Syntax (NAPLPS) graphics language develop from the Canadian Telidon system. It could use up to 9600 baut to receive messages, much higer that the 300 or 1200 baud modems used in Canadian systems. It also used a wireless keyboard-controlled system to deliver information selected by provider and email services via a modem-equipped box (.1) attached to an ordinary television. The infrared beam emitted by remote unit in the keyboard controlled the decoder. The system used NAPLPS protocol videotext, providing useable information transfer rates, even at very low data rates. The Sceptre system was also used in field trial in Coral Gables, Florida, where they tested using high speed communications directly to the homes using a digital protocol called HDLC.
