Période: Crock mfd after 1970 (when "USA" was added to company logo); Karsh of Ottawa studio operated until1992.
Canada: Part of a large collection of photographic equipment used by Yousuf Karsh, Canada's internationally honoured portrait photographer. From 1932 to 1992, Mr. Karsh operated from his principle studio in Ottawa, photographing heads of state, religious leaders, and those prominent in business, the arts and entertainment. His photographic prints and negatives, and personal papers are in the National Archives of Canada.
Fonction: To contain for storage both solid and/or liquid foodstuffs. In this specific instance, this crock was used to mix and store gold toner used in photographic processing and finishing.
Technique: Mr. Karsh's assistants mixed the gold toner for his photographs, according to the formula and instructions he provided. The toner was made in an earthenware crock, and added to or replenished as needed. Karsh originally had two crocks for this purpose - one was broken when put into storage at the Chateau Laurier. (Ref.2)

Marques: Blue stamp on crock front depicts a crown, with "5" marked in a central disc on crown front and "U.S.A." in lower portion of crown. "6.75" handwritten in blue grease pencil on front, above crown. Yellow sticker, to left of pencil markings, reads "DOVER'S HARDWARE/ 6.75". "USA" incised in base. "13" handwritten in black grease pencil.

Fini: Off-white exterior; dark brown interior. Glazed overall.
