Canada: The Societe Cooperative de Pecheurs de Carleton was established in 1923 by commercial salmon fishers in the Baie des Chaleurs region to market their catches of Atlantic salmon and achieve higher prices for their catches. The Carleton co-op is representative of the growth of the co-op movement in Quebec, which began in the early 1900s led by members of the province's Roman Catholic clergy. The co-op closed in 1989 after declines in Atlantic salmon populations. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) institued a moratorium on commercial fisheries for salmon in 1971 and permanently closed them in Quebec and Atlantic Canada in 1984.
Fonction: A wooden shipping box used to ship fresh Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) on ice, caught in the Baie des Chaleurs, Gaspe penisula, from Carleton, Quebec.
Technique: This box was to used deliver salmon on ice to Alexander Neil McLean, senator for New Brunswick in the Senate of Canada between 1945 and 1967.
