An example of a snow science instrument reported to come from the Atmospheric Environment Service of Environment Canada and used for sampling ground snow load and runoff to lakes and rivers, then acquired, used, and possibly subsequently modified by the NRC for sampling snow on roof surfaces. This knife was used to help with the extraction of snow samples from a snow extraction tube. A snow sampler often collects debris that was also cleaned with this knife. Samples can also be a little large at the mouth of the extraction tube and this knife would have been used to trim them down to make extraction easier.
