The B of LF&E was founded in the US in 1873 as the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen but then renamed (1906) to include Enginemen as they found that a number of their members were promoted to engineer in the course of their careers. The Brotherhood was modelled on the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and came to Canada in 1877 but it was not until the 1880s that Canadian workers joined the group in large numbers. These US-based organizations had both a benevolent role -- to provide accident and life insurance to members -- and an industrial one -- to engage in collective bargaining with railway management. - Area Notes
