Apollo 8 was the first crewed spacecraft to orbit the Moon as part of NASA’s Apollo Program. American astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders orbited the Moon ten times, launching on December 21, 1968 and landing back on Earth on December 27, 1968. After the cancellation of the Avro Arrow project in 1959, twelve Canadian Avro Canada engineers went to NASA to work for the Space Task Group, which was working on all aspects of the U.S.’s spaceflight programs. Owen Maynard was one of the Canadian engineers who went to work for NASA’s Space Task Group, first as an Aeronautical Research Engineer with Project Mercury, before turning to the Apollo Program and becoming the Chief of Systems Engineering in the Apollo Office in 1964. This certificate and medallion containing aluminum flown on the Apollo 8 spacecraft, were awarded to Maynard for his contributions towards the success of the Apollo 8 Mission. - Function
-
To honour the recipient as contributing to the success of NASA’s Apollo 8 Mission. - Technical
-
The medallion attached to this certificate is made out of aluminum that was flown on the Apollo 8 spacecraft. It was melted down and added to the metal that was used to make the medallion. - Area Notes

- Printed on the certificate: "[logo] BORMAN MOVELL ANDERS/ MANNED FLIGHT AWARENESS/ APOLLO 8/ [set circular seal] FIRST LUNAR APOLLO FLIGHT/ IN/ APPRECIATION/ FOR YOUR/ CONTRIBUTION TO THE/ APOLLO SATURN PROJECT,/ THE APOLLO 8 CREW/ CARRIED METAL IN THIS/MEDALLION ON MAN'S/ FIRST FLIGHT TO/ THE MOON/ Although many thousands of us have worked to make our manned space flight pos-/ sible, only a few of us can experience the incomparable travel in space./ It seemed to us that there should be some way of providing those who worked in the/ program some symbol of their efforts. We carried on the first manned lunar flight a/ small piece of aluminum. This piece of metal was melted down and incorporated in-/ to the metal used in making this commemorative medallion./ I hope that this will serve not only to give you a sense of active participation in/ this historic flight, but also to assure each of you in the appreciation of Astronauts/ Borman, Lovell and Anders for the superior workmanship, conscientious performance,/ and dedication to the safety of fellow human beings that made our successful flight/ a reality and will do the same for the missions that remain ahead of us./ [signature] Frank Borman/ Frank Borman"/ Moulded into the metal of the medallion: "BORMAN LOVELL ANDERS/ APOLLO 8/ DECEMBER 21-27, 1988"
