Phantom 2 drone was the first to be employed by CTV Edmonton for newsgathering. Cameron Wiebe would become the broadcaster’s first drone pilot. This Phantom 2 drone permitted CTV Edmonton to sufficiently demonstrate the benefits of drone videography for the station’s newsgathering and broadcasting purposes. CTV Edmonton eventually upgraded to their next drone (an Inspire 1 Pro), which resulted in the Phantom 2 being retired from service. CTV Edmonton’s Remotely Piloted Aircraft System RPAS which began in 2014 now has three licensed drone operators and a fleet of drones (Mavic 2 Pros) which they use for each daily live news show (4 times per day, for traffic, weather, and news stories), as well as for pre-recorded content. Function

The controller used to operate a drone functions by emitting a radio signal from the remote with the help of a radio transmitter inside the controller. The drone has a receiver that interprets the radio signal and the controller can thereby tell the drone what its supposed to do. Le contrôleur pour opérer un drone fonctionne en émettant un signal radioélectrique avec un transmetteur à l'intérieur du contrôleur. Le drone peut interpréter le signal grâce à un receveur et ainsi le contrôleur peut contrôler les manoeuvres du drone.

Technical

The DJI Phantom 2 was among the first consumer drones available in Canada that were designed specifically for capturing aerial video. The most significant feature, according to Cam, was the Phantom 2’s gyro-stabilized video capabilities, which permitted the capturing of smooth aerial video. Other features such as smooth flight and stable hovering capabilities, decent flight time (up to 25 minutes per battery) and rechargeable and replaceable batteries also came standard with the drone. The Phantom 2 did not come equipped with its own camera however. CTV Edmonton used a GoPro Hero3+, purchased separately, with its Phantom 2 drone. Finish

A white synthetic square shaped object. Two silver metal switches sit at the top with one on either corner of the controller. An adjustable white synthetic antenna sits between them. Two silver metal joysticks are attached to black synthetic fasteners below the two switches. A silver metal hook sits between them. On the bottom of the controller is a white synthetic power button that slides from left to right to turn it on. The controller has a metal foot on its back to help it stand as well as a silver manufacturing label with black lettering. Un objet fait en forme carrée qui est construite avec un matériel synthétique blanche. Il a deux interrupteurs en métal de couleur argent qui sont visibles au haut du Contrôleur. Une antenne qui est ajustable et faite avec du matériel synthétique est assit entre les deux interrupteurs. Deux leviers de commandes sont attachés au contrôleur avec des pièces de fixation synthétique de couleur noire en dessous des interrupteurs. Il y a un anneau en métal entre les deux leviers. En bas des leviers il y a un bouton glissant pour la mise en marche du contrôleur. Le contrôleur a un pied en métal sur sont dessous ainsi qu'un autocollant de couleur argent avec de l'information du manufacturier en lettrage noire.
