George William Grant McConachie (1909-1965) was an outstanding figure in Canadian aviation history. His full story is narrated by Ronald A. Keith in the 1972 biography, Bush Pilot With A Briefcase; The Happy-Go-Lucky Story of Grant McConachie. In 1941, having sold his own frontier airline, Yukon Southern Air Transport, to the new Canadian Pacific Airlines, he became the general manager of CPA. In 1947 he was appointed its President. He subsequently made CPA a truly international carrier. By 1949 he had inaugurated scheduled air passenger service from Vancouver, British Columbia, over the 8,400 mile (13,500 km) route to Sydney, Australia, and the 6,500 miles (10,460 km) from Vancouver to Tokyo, Japan, and Hong Kong. This was a multi-million dollar gamble on the future of air transportation, and it achieved his goal of a successful Canadian great-circle route by air to the Orient. McConachie was a dynamic, persuasive and effective executive, and by the end of 1957 he had directed the launching of seven more international routes, including the capital cities of Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Holland, Portugal, and Spain. His honours included award of the Trans-Canada Trophy (the McKee Trophy) in 1945, followed by posthumous induction into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame (1973) and the Canadian Business Hall of Fame (1979). As for the artist Robert S Hyndman - Robert Hyndman has been a professional artist for more than 65 years. After joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in June 1940, he learned to fly and then served as a flight instructor at Uplands Airport in Ottawa from 1941-¬43. In July 1943, Hyndman returned to England where he flew Spitfires over the English Channel. After the war, he moved into a successful career painting portraits and murals. And for eight consecutive summers–starting in 1964–he taught at the Banff School of Fine Arts. Hyndman also taught two days a week at the Ottawa School of Art.
