Used at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. - Function
-
For the administration of methoxyflurane. Pour l’administration de méthoxyflurane. - Technical
-
This Penthrane vaporizer would have been part of the anesthetic machine but could have been swapped out for a vaporizer for another agent, such as halothane. Methoxyflurane had a green apple sweetish smell and was a very good analgesic agent. But it took a long time to induce a patient with this agent. Another side effect was that of renal (kidney) toxicity, from release of fluoride ions in the body. The donor recalls using this agent, when she was a resident in Halifax (1975-1980) for part of anesthetics, to add to the analgesia, but not for the entire case, because of the risk of what was termed 'high-output renal failure'. (The patient made a lot of urine but it was very dilute.) Fortunately, if properly supported, most patients made a full recovery. Dr Roger Maltby thought that the agent was used in the Foothills Hospital in the early 1970s but the vaporizers were not available in every OR and the agent was not very popular. Most anesthesiologists in Canada would have stopped using this agent by about 1985. - Area Notes
