Thomas Walker and Son were inventors and makers of nautical instruments in the 19th and 20th centuries. Their firm made logs, which were one of the most commonly used navigation instrument as they allowed sailors to measure distance at sea. The exact Canadian provenance of this artifact is unknown but it is possible that it came into the collection in the 1970s when Ingenium was collecting parts from a group of Canadian government ships built during the Second World War that were decommissioned in the 1970s. - Function
-
Device used to measure the speed of a vessel through water or the distance sailed in a given time. - Technical
-
“Probably the most successful of the large, electric ship-logs. Introduced in 1934. Was used in conjunction with a wheelhouse repeater which allowed the log to be read in the charthouse rather than having to walk aft to check the reading of the taffrail. Distance run could be checked at a glance and any problems with a fouled rotator would be noticed more quickly. At one stage use with a copper cored log-line to combat the sharks but the line proved to be inflexible and inaccurate. Dispatch date from the Walker’s records - 1941.” (ref.2) - Area Notes
