George Morris invented the horse-drawn rod weeder in 1929. It was innovative in that it could uproot weeds with minimal disruption to the top layers of soil. Given the dust storms and erosion which plagued farmers in the 1930s, the device became very popular with Prairie farmers. [Ref. 2] - Area Notes
