This switchboard was manufactured by the Bell Telephone Co. of Canada in Montreal some time between 1886 and 1896, making it one of the oldest surviving switchboards made in this country. It represents the beginning of telephone equipment production in Canada and the key role that telephone operators (generally women) quickly assumed in the efficient functioning of telephone networks. Function

Provide a telephone operator with facilities to connect the lines of telephone subscribers on demand and to send and receive signals in support of this. Technical

In 1880 Western Electric introduced the Standard board, whose design would set the pattern for decades. The Standard board consists of an array of jacks, each of which is the terminus of a subscriber line. Connections between jacks are made by plugging in patch cords. Above the jack field are annunciator drops, each again connected to a subscriber line. These signal the operator when a subscriber wishes to place a call. All signalling, either by the subscriber or the operator, is accomplished by cranking a magneto, which produces a burst of alternating current capable of tripping a drop and ringing a bell. Finish

A brown wood varnished 20-line switchboard with possibly synthetic patch lines for an operator to insert into a metal plug cylendar sockets. It also has a metal magneto crank on its proper left side. Un standard de 20 lignes en bois avec un vernis brun et des Jack et fiche possiblement synthétique et des douilles en métal. Il y a aussi un magnéto sur son bon côté gauche.
