This artifact is an extinguisher such as the one used to protect the books and other materials in the Rare Book Room (RBR) of the Library & Information Services of the Canada Science and Technology Museum. Their location offers a storage tank for the Halon Fire suppression System. It was installed ca. 1990 and removed in the summer of 2007 prior to such systems being made illegal due to the impact of the upper atmospheric ozone. - Function
-
A pipe adapter designed to help facilitate the functions of the Halon 1301 fire extinguisher. - Technical
-
From the 1960s-1970s halon gas was used to protect computer installations in the case of fire. Unlike traditional water fire suppression systems, halon did not damage the electronics or the computers and in the case of libraries with rare books avoided costly water damage. Such systems worked by absorbing all of the oxygen from the air. Being heavier than air, the halon migrated towards the floor and people therefore had to be aware that they needed to evacuate the area immediately that a fire alarm and/or the halon system went off. They had only between 20-30 seconds to evacuate before the oxygen was deleted. - Area Notes
