High quality top-loading VHS VCR featured easy-to-access controls [located on machine front], remote control operation, and a "timer" permitting recording of up to 8 preselected programs. The ability to "time-shift" television viewing was assisted by devices such as this. VCRs have been popular in homes for approx. 20 years: DVD players are starting to replace them/be present in addition to them. [Ref. 1]
