Canada: HYPSOMETER WAS AMONG SURVEY INSTRUMENTS COLLECTED BY MR. LOU SEBERT, A TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEYOR AND MAPPER WHO WORKED FOR THE CANADIAN ARMY'S SURVEY AND MAPPING DIVISION, AND CLOSELY WITH THE STAFF OF THE TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY OF CANADA. HE AUTHORED MANY PAPERS AND WAS CO-EDITOR OF 'MAPPING A NORTHERN LAND' (1999).
Function: USED TO MEASURE THE VERTICAL HEIGHT OF AN OBJECT, SUCH AS A TREE.
Technical: THIS VERSION PATTERNED AFTER KLAUSSNER STYLE INSTRUMENT. IT ALLOWED TOTAL HEIGHT OF OBJECT BEING MEASURED TO BE READ DIRECTLY FROM ONE SCALE, WITHOUT THE NECESSITY OF ADDING THE READINGS ABOVE AND BELOW THE OBSERVER'S LEVEL. THE WEIGHTEDALTITUDE SCALE IS LESS SUBJECT TO MOVEMENT CAUSED BY WIND, SMALL VIBRATION, ETC.

Markings: "KEUFFEL & ESSER Co/ NEW-YORK" stamped on end of one scale, near sight; scale labelled 10 to 60, and divided in 1/20 increments. Weighted scale labelled 10 to 50, and divided in 1/10 increments. Altitude scale graduated to 50 equal parts: "50" stamped in mid-section.
Missing: APPEARS COMPLETE.
Finish: MOST EXTERIOR SURFACES HAVE DULL BLACK FINISH. BRIGHT BRASS FINISH ON WEIGHT AND TRIPOD SOCKET. DULL SILVER METAL SCALES.
