Canada: TYPE OF HELMET WORN BY CANADIAN FIREFIGHTERS DURING 1950S +. THE CAIRNS & BROTHER COMPANY WAS AN IMPORTANT SUPPLIER OF FIRE HELMETS IN CANADA.
Function: TO PROTECT THE HEAD OF A FIREFIGHTER WHILE FIRE FIGHTING.
Technical: EARLIEST RECOGNIZABLE FIRE HELMETS WERE MADE OF LEATHER; IN 1920S ALUMINUM, AND THEN COMPOSITE MATERIALS (FIBREGLASS, +) WERE USED. THESE HELMETS WERE LIGHTER, MORE RESILIENT, AND OFFERED FIREFIGHTERS A GREATER DEGREE OF PROTECTION AND COMFORT THAN EARLY HELMETS. BLACK COLOUR HELMET IS WORNBY ORDINARY FIREFIGHTERS.

Markings: " 1600/ C. BOIVIN " handwritten in white (paint ?) on underside of helmet back brim. " CAIRN[S]/ SANITARY/ Cushion Liner/ PATENTED/ AND/ PATS. PEND " printed on fabric tag attached to fabric liner. Remnants of smaller paper tag present, but illegible.
Missing: HELMET ITSELF IS COMPLETE; INSIGNIA & HARNESS ARE MISSING.
Finish: BLACK EXTERIOR; BROWN LEATHER & FABRIC LINERS.
