EARLIEST RECOGNIZABLE FIRE HELMETS WERE MADE OF LEATHER; IN 1920S ALUMINUM, AND THEN COMPOSITE MATERIALS (FIBREGLASS, +) WERE USED. THESE HELMETS WERE LIGHTER, MORE RESILIENT, AND OFFERED FIREFIGHTERS A GREATER DEGREE OF PROTECTION AND COMFORT THAN EARLY HELMETS. BLACK COLOUR HELMET IS WORNBY ORDINARY FIREFIGHTERS. - Area Notes

- " 1600/ C. BOIVIN " handwritten in white (paint ?) on underside of helmet back brim. " CAIRN[S]/ SANITARY/ Cushion Liner/ PATENTED/ AND/ PATS. PEND " printed on fabric tag attached to fabric liner. Remnants of smaller paper tag present, but illegible.
