EXAMPLE OF ROLLING MILL USED TO PRODUCE WIRE OF SELECTED DIAMETER BY FEEDING A SHEET OFFINE METAL (IE. SILVER) BETWEEN TWO GROOVED ROLLERS. WIRE ROLLING MILLS MAY HAVE ORIGINATED IN THE 16TH CENTURY; THE EARLIEST WERE TURNED BY HAND. LATER ROLLING MILLS WERE POWERED BY STEAM, GAS ENGINE OR ELECTRIC MOTOR. THIS ROLLING MILL APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN CONVERTED FROM HAND TO ELECTRIC POWER OVER THE COURSE OF ITS WORKING LIFE, POSSIBLY IN 1950S. (SEE BIRKS DOC. "SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS & ALTERATIONS..."
