Lighting produced by an electric arc obtained with metallic sodium. The first sodium bulb was invented by Westinghouse in 1920. OSRAM improved the quality of the glass used in 1931, however Philips began commercial production in 1932. This bulb was made with new glass developed by Philips in 1955 that improved the resistance to sodium vapour. Previous to this, sodium bulbs discoloured quickly. This change was a great improvement, but the bulbs needed to be installed correctly in order to avoid the sodium travelling through the tube and depositing a mirrored finish on the inside, reducing light transmission. Light obtained was orange in colour, which was less harsh than white light. - Area Notes
