DEVELOPED IN ABOUT THE 15TH CENTURY, THE THUMB LANCET QUICKLY BECAME THE PREFERRED INSTRUMENT FOR OPENING A VEIN IN ANY PART OF THE BODY. THE ANGLE AT WHICH THE BLADE WAS HELD COULD BE ALTERED, & THE SHAPE OF THE BLADE DETERMINED THE EASE WITH WHICH THE SKIN & VEIN COULD BE PENETRATED. ASURGEON WOULD CARRY A VARIETY OF SIZES & SHAPES, AS WELL AS A CONTAINER FOR COLLECTING & MEASURING BLOOD LET. - Area Notes
