THIS TYPE OF WOODEN WORK BOAT MAY HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED TO CANADA BY THE LOYALISTS IN THE 1780S. BY THE BEGINNING OF THE 18TH CENTURY THEBOATS WERE USED IN SAINT JOHN HARBOUR FOR CATCHING SALMON, SHAD, GASPEREAUX & OTHER FISH. USED UNTIL RECENTLY IN GASPEREAU & SHAD FISHERIES BUT NONE BUILT SINCE C.1970. - Function

WORK BOAT USED FOR FISHING IN SAINT JOHN HARBOUR. - Technical

ST. JOHN RIVER SALMON SKIFF REPRESENTS PROBABLY THE OLDEST SURVIVING WOODEN WORK BOAT TRADITION IN CANADA. THEIR METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION, ONCE COMMON, WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY REPLACED BY THE WIDESPREAD ACCEPTANCE OF STEAM BENDING IN THE MID-19TH C.. THIS BOAT TYPE IS AN IMPORTANT LINK IN THE HISTORY OF SMALL CRAFT TECHNOLOGY (SEE ACQUISITION PROPOSAL NOTES IN SUPP. INFO. FILE). - Area Notes
