This outboard motor was used on the Dragon Class yacht ‘Frolic’ 880295, owned and raced by Gordon Mchaffie of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club of Toronto between 1965-1983. The motor was created by the British Seagull company. The British Seagull was a British company based in Poole, Dorset, that produced two-stroke outboard engines from the late 1930s to the mid-1990s. Model 102 first went into production in 1936 on a small-scale production, but soon a larger production as consumer demand increased. Their “Classic” engines were renowned for their durable simplicity and reliability, setting a standard for many years. However, the company faced challenges as customer preferences shifted and stricter emissions regulations were implemented. In 1996, the production of complete engines ceased, leading to the company's ultimate failure. - Function

The artifact can be attached to the stern of a small boat, in this case a yacht. The object has a small internal combustion engine that has 1 cylinder and a 3 ½ - 4 HP engine. This artifact was used to power the Dragon Class yacht 880295. - Technical

In outboard engines, fuel and air are burned in a closed space, known as the cylinder; this burning process generates hot gasses that try to expand. The only way for the hot gasses to expand is by pushing the piston downward; the piston is connected to a rod, which is linked to the crankshaft. The crankshaft converts the piston’s downward motion into a rotating motion of the shaft. Two-stroke engines are known for their simplicity and affordability. They are lightweight and compact, but oil is mixed with the fuel to lubricate the internal parts and during the combustion process. Some of the fuel mixture from that process escapes with the exhaust, resulting in wasted fuel making them less fuel-efficient and also noisier as well as posing risks in the form of water pollution. This outboard motor has a simple design and most motors from this company are hand built with “Old World Craftsmanship”. - Area Notes
