TATE'S ARITHOMETER WAS A COMMERCIALLYMADE CALCULATOR SIMILAR TO THOMAS DE COLMAR'S ARITHOMETRE, WHICH WAS DEVELOPED IN FRANCE IN THE 1820'S. THE LATTER WAS BASED UPON THE STEPPED DRUM MECHANISM INVENTED BY LEIBNITZ OF GERMANY IN THE 1670'S. ARITHOMETERS REMAINED IN PRODUCTION UNTIL ABOUT 1914 (REF. 1). - Area Notes
