Function

To provide auxiliary light for objects being examined under a microscope.

Technical

This is an illuminator for "bright light", i.e. white light, microscopic observations. The slot near the front also permitted the use of a variety of filters -- coloured or polarized. The opaque glass provided a more even illumination across the field of view.
