This spike was intended to be the last spike in CPR's transcontinental line. It was bent and removed, and a second spike was used. That last spike's whereabouts are unconfirmed. This spike was kept by the Hon. David Smith, and returned by his great-grandson, Lord Strathcona to CP in 1985, for donation to NMST (received by museum 1991.05.10). - Function

This spike was intended to be the last spike, but it was bent by the Hon. Donald Smith, Sr., Director of C.P.R., and was removed and replaced by a second spike. - Technical
