This Ordinary cycle is the last of the dwarf front-driving bicycles of the late 19th century. The company called Crypto Bantam was likely responsible for the creation of this object based on its model name. They also produced the Bantamette, which was a ladies’ model, where the lack of a chain and the smaller size were perhaps deemed more appealing. This bicycle could also have contributed to a change in women’s fashion. Women riders began to wear skirts a couple of inches above their ankles to avoid getting their feet caught up in the hem as they rotated the pedals. They also quickly adopted chain guards and skirt guards on the back wheel to prevent their clothes from getting caught in the moving parts of this bicycle. - Function
-
This artifact is a small safety bicycle that is used as a mode of transportation with a chainless drive. - Technical
-
The Bantams used a special gear system called spur gears. Two smaller pinions in the crankshaft connected to a larger one, which then powered the front wheel. These spur gears also allowed for the front wheel to rotate farther for each turn of the cranks, basically up-gearing the smaller bicycle. Another advantage of the Bantam series is the smaller stature of the bicycle. The advertisements for the Crypto-Bantam bicycle marketed it as a quite ride that was safe and easy to learn. It also marketed the bicycle as a bicycle that was light and fast that did not require a large step to mount. - Area Notes
