The geared Facile bicycle was likely on the Canadian market for imports between 1878 – 1890. - Function
-
The bicyclist pushed up and down to operate the pedals instead of in a circular arc as a means of transportation. - Technical
-
The Facile provided safety by lowering the rider’s position, thus the need for lever pedals emerged. This particular velocipede also has gears that create the stroke of pedaling distance shorter or longer, depending on the arrangement. This means that if the gears on bicycles were connected directly, pedaling forwards would actually drive you backwards. To solve this problem, the two gears were connected by chains, and thus the chain-driven bicycle allowed users to go further and faster in the forward direction by pedaling less, therefore giving them less strain and more efficiency. - Area Notes
