Canada
Racing bicycles became a small phenomenon in Europe when the Michaux bicycle appeared on the scene. These races found their way into Anglo Canadian society. With the advances of the high-wheeler, faster speeds could be achieved and this drove people to race and create records. Over time, and especially with the development of the safety bicycle, many different kinds of bicycle races were held: Mass start events, time trials, cyclo-cross events, and a variety of track races, but all of these events were born from the advent of racing the ordinary. Record holders in races with high-wheelers achieved 50 miles in under 3 hours, showing the potential speed of travel the ordinary could achieve. Riders were almost exclusively of the business and professional classes, the youths riding and racing high bicycles were often the sons of leading Canadian families. Unlike the later safety bicycle, Ordinary racing was exclusively done by Canadian men.
Function
This is a variant on the Ordinary bicycle that functions as a means of transportation for a rider.
Technical
This bicycle is clearly a machine optimized for racing. This artifact features an all-metal frame, metal wheels/rims, and solid rubber tires. It features wooden handgrips and a leather saddle. Most importantly, every aspect of this machine is maximized and minimized. The wheels are incredibly large and the difference is staggering. At the same time, there are no unnecessary parts on or about the bicycle, with the saddle prominently sitting extremely low to the backbone. High bicycles used for racing were built with as big a wheel as possible, and the saddle was usually lowered and clamped onto the backbone to permit a larger wheel. The smaller wheel behind the ordinary shortened the machine and gave it support. The augmented size of the wheel allowed a rider to travel more net distance without needing to exert more effort.
