Period
TURN OF THE 20C
Canada
In Canada, many women were participating in social activism and advocating for women’s independence and rights within society. One machine that helped them achieve this was the bicycle. It was one of the tools that women's rights activists used to gain reforms in causes like access to higher education, female dress reform and bicycle-riding for women. More and more, women were mounting bicycles, despite the cycling world being dominated by masculinity in the age of the Ordinary. The safety bicycle came with a great demand to the women of Canadian and American society and if bicycle manufacturers did not accommodate this demand, they would stand to lose out on profits, and competitors strived to tap into this market to gain an edge on their own. Bicycle riding was not yet acceptable for women due to Victorian ideals and was seen as a push against the images of ideal womanhood. With the booming popularity of the safety bicycle, health and safety concerns from the bicycle were no longer valid counters to the freedom granted by the bicycle for sport, health, travel, and leisure.
Function
This bicycle functions as a mode of transportation. It is a women’s model, with the drop frame for skirts.
Technical
This model does not feature a brake system. Brakes for this model were available but apparently considered optional. Going without the brake went with the philosophy of lessening overall bicycle weight, or perhaps even saving money. There were many parts that someone could outfit their bike with, with the evolution of the safety, buyers could choose which accessories they wanted, and some accessories were not from the original bicycle manufacturer that might have created their frame. This bicycle is built with diamond frame but in the Women’s Cycle style. This style made the top tube of the diamond frame lowered down to just above the main lower tube, where it then joined and further braced the tube supporting the seat and crank bracket above the pedals.
