Nickel-iron batteries were widely used in Canada, espeically on telephone poles and for railroad signaling. - Function
-
The bottles contained battery oil used in nickel-iron batteries. - Technical

To prevent evaporation and gassing during the charging of nickel-iron batteries, battery oil was poured on top of the fresh electrolyte in battery each cell.
