IMPORTANT EARLY MACHINE USED IN RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE The Lidgerwood consists of a large winch drum driven by a two cylinder steam engine with steam supplied from the locomotive via a hose. In use, the car was placed at the head of a train of flat cars, the cable being laid out and attached to a blade at the last car. When power was applied to the drum, the blade reversed the cars and swept the ballast off. - Area Notes
