- The artefact was built in June of 1923. It was in regular work service until 1974. After a down period of twenty years, it was returned to demonstration service in 1995 and has now been active in that line of work for nine years. Over that span of time, many original parts have been replaced as they wore out, were damaged or lost. The original specification has changed somewhat in detail as the locomotive was modernized as necessary and more change occurred during the restoration process at CSTM. The largest change occurred during regular work service when the locomotive that we have was actually reconstituted from two locomotives. The boiler on the CSTM locomotive comes from Merrill and Ring #3 and the rest of the locomotive is actually Merrill and Ring #4. This was the result of practical considerations by the commercial owners as they tried to extend the life of their motive power fleet. The bachground of the artefact is well chronicled in early condition reports within the artefact dossier. CSTM received a small quantity of spare parts along with the locomotive when it was collected in 1974. Some of these parts were exchanged for those on the locomotive, when it was restored. During the course of restoration, it became obvious that some parts had been altered from original specification during use. Some parts had been added. The specifiaction to which the locomotive was restored also introduced changes due to the shortage of artefact documentation and available supporting technical information. These matters are also detailed with the artefact dossier and shall not be repeated here. Suffice to say that there have been many detail changes to the artefact throughout its lifespan. The artefact remains reasonably faithful to its original design, however. A particular area in which the specification falls short is in the area of accessories. These items have also been identified and have been put on an optional list of tasks for upgrading (as time and budget permit). One secific item that is missing but that is not really an accessory, is a siphon for replenishing the tender water from a lake or stream. It also is on the list of optional tasks to do.
