This plot-marker purportedly belonged to Dr. Charles E. Saunders, Dominion Cerealist from 1903 to1922. Saunders was the son of William Saunders, first director of the Central Experimental Farm. Saunders is credited with the creation of the Marquis variety of wheat, work begun by his father and brother A.P. (Percy) Saunders. Marquis was an early-maturing variety of wheat suited for the climate of the Canadian prairies and became the dominant variety during the dramatic expansion of wheat cultivation in the west.
Function
"This centgener marker was used by Dr. Charles E .Saunders to mark out the plots where he sowed his hybrids & selections. This marker was pressed into the well-worked soil & a single seed was dropped in each hole, which spaced the resulting plants sufficiently far apart for close examination." This description is from a catalogue card in the archives of the Canadian Museum of History.
Technical
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary online gives this an example of centgener in its definition": 100 plants (as of wheat) derived from a single parent and so planted (as in plots or rows) that the value of the breed may be determined." (www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/centgener)
