Canada: THIS KEY WAS USED BY A SMALL ONTARIO RAIL CO. CALLED THE PORT WHITBY & PORT PERRY RAILWAY CO. BUT IN MARCH 1874 IT CHANGED IT'S NAME TO THE WHITBY & PORT PERRY EXTENSION RY CO WITH AUTHORITY TO BUILD TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN. THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN BUT WENT AS FAR AS LINDSAY WITH A NEW NAME IN 1877. [REF 1]
Function: USED TO LOCK A SWITCH BOX ON A RAILWAY LINE.
Technical: RAIL SWITCHES HAD TO BE CAREFULLY MONITORED SO THAT THEY WERE ONLY MOVED WHEN REQUIRED IN ORDER TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS SO THE SWITCH BOX WAS SECURED BY LOCK AGAINST UNAUTHORIZED USE.
