Black Mfg. Co made its mark with the Tribune Bicycle. The Tribune Bicycle was made in Erie Pennsylvania between approximately 1894 and 1899. Bicycles such as this one were made in an era where this mode of transportation was increasingly getting faster. The speed of these machines was also attractive to the Canadian market and thus the Tribune seeing its sales grow throughout Canada. Canadian weather also brought its own unique challenges. This meant that oil and lubricant was necessary to keep the machine working well, and they were sold in oiling cans at bicycle retail stores and bicycle repair shops to circumvent seizing parts during the colder months. - Function

This bicycle contains a chain drive, brakes, and a diamond frame. The diamond frame consisted of straight steel tubes, either brazed or welded together, connected directly to all other important components, and supported the riders’ weight and distributed it evenly across the machine. Chains were also seeing innovative improvement thanks to oil and lubricant. Chains were prone to catching mud and dust and trapping it in the mechanism, and cleaning a chain was perhaps a tiresome process. The rider could buy a self-oiling system or oil their chain themselves, which would prevent rust and other dirt from accumulating in the right inner workings of the chain. These items were sold in oiling cans at bicycle retail stores and bicycle repair shops in almost any big town in Canada. - Area Notes
